Reformer Pilates is performed on specialist equipment (the reformer), which allows for a more dynamic, and targeted workout.
The Pilates reformer is an amazing piece of apparatus unlike no other; the reformer helps you to find length and space in the body. It’s a far cry from a workout aimed at your core, this piece of apparatus helps create internal pressure to elongate the spine, joints, and muscles. Expect to work on your flexibility, strength, stamina and enjoy a more balanced posture.
Reformer Pilates offers sop many life-changing benefits. Here are our top 5 benefits to reformer Pilates classes.
While using the reformer, your teacher will identify any imbalances within your body and adjust the exercise, add or remove props or adapt the resistance accordingly. Instead of focusing on a specific injured area, your Chapel Allerton Pilates teacher will holistically view the body. We use this approach to ensure that the targeted area is treated while balancing the muscles in the body to prevent aggravation to the injury in the future.
Using a reformer to perform specific movements provides a balanced, full-body workout. The subtly of the springs on a reformer strengthens the entire body. Where there is weakness, you can work unilaterally to focus on and correct imbalances.
Reformer Pilates allows you to move through your full range while working on strengthening muscles. This dynamic exercise uses the machine’s springs to create resistance and focus equally on the concentric and eccentric contractions. This method creates long, lean, toned muscles.
If you’re looking for a low impact, but high-intensity exercise reformer Pilates is for you. Reformer Pilates is ideal if you are recovering from an injury or unable to do high-impact exercise. The springs and ropes are designed to allow you to work the horizontal plane rather than weight-bearing, which reduces the load through your body.

There are three main things you need to know about the Pilates Reformer when looking at how to use the machine.
The springs sit underneath the carriage, and by changing the springs, the carriage resistance becomes more accessible or more difficult to move along the frame. The springs are colour coded, and you can have more than one spring attached to the carriage at a time. The lighter the spring does not equate to a more effortless movement; if the spring weight is lighter, the resistance on the carriage will be more lightweight. This means you will have to engage more core strength to stay balanced.
The carriage is the base of the Pilates reformer, which is the platform on which most exercises are conducted. The carriage glides on wheels located just inside the frame and is tethered by the springs. The carriage moves along the frame vertically and will be pushed and pulled by your body weight. You can operate the carriage in two ways. The first is laying flat on top of it, ensuring your neck is placed between the shoulder rests for safety. You will then push and pull the carriage along the frame using either the foot bar at the front of the platform or the straps. The second way the carriage can be used is for seated exercises or lunges.
The reformer has long straps located at the top of the frame with handles for feet or hands. The springs are adjusted to affect the footbar and the straps to modify the workout for different skill levels and body types.
