We met with Sadie to talk all things being pregnant again and what she knows now…

Hi I’m Sadie, Pilates teacher at CAP and soon-to-be mum of 3. I have 2 daughters, Alice 11, and Annabelle 9 and I’m 24 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby, a boy!

My Pilates journey started after I had my second daughter in 2014. I had chronic back and pelvic pain which was getting worse. My husband booked me 5 121 sessions with Claire Sparrow out of desperation as I was really struggling to function.

When I met Claire Sparrow, I was very low in mood, I felt exhausted and agitated with the pain. She reassured me that there was light at the end of the tunnel and that with commitment I would improve. If I’m honest, I was sceptical, but my husband had paid so I came, did what she said and did the homework.

After coming for about 6 weeks something happened! I woke up one day and could sit up in bed. I hadn’t been able to do that and was rolling over on to the floor to get up. From that moment I had faith in Pilates and kept going and got fitter and stronger than I was before. Fast forward 10 years and now I’m teaching pre and postnatal Pilates at Claire’s studio!

Now pregnant again at 41 I’m worried the pelvic pain might come back. Having pelvic pain in a previous pregnancy is a risk factor for recurrence.

Here’s what I know now, that I wish I’d known then:

1. Daily Pilates practice, no matter how small works
2. Safe movement following Claire’s whole body pelvic heath principles helps me keep going without injury
3. Adapting my training in the gym to follow this means I can continue throughout my pregnancy, which makes me happy
4. Careful functional movement and pelvic floor awareness, knowing my own body, helps me know when to rest, when to breathe and how to cope if the pain comes back.

I have my husband to thank for seeking help for me when I couldn’t. I have Claire to thank for teaching me these things and for mentoring me in a career I absolutely love. I am grateful and incredibly proud to work at Chapel Allerton Pilates and to help other pre and postnatal women.
