Online Pilates Classes
The question I get asked the most about (primarily free) follow-along classes on YouTube or other platforms. My answer is, more often than not: “if you find something good out there, let me know!” It also freaks me out when people tell me they’ve injured this or tweaked it from doing one of these classes. Then, of course, there is the occasional helpful freebie video. But, more often than not, it’s a follow-along situation, so apart from us all straining our necks to see what’s going on, we aren’t receiving personal cues provided in live teacher-led online classes like at Chapel Allerton Pilates.
Movement is very personal, and investing in attending a weekly online class with a teacher you connect with is priceless! We get to know you and your movement habits; we know what to look out for and can encourage healthier strategies for each person, unlike a follow-along class. And is it just me, or are they always so fast and challenging to keep up with?!
The team at Chapel Allerton Pilates believes in the value of Pilates, it’s a way of life, and it is life-changing. There is no doubt about it! But it goes beyond the studio equipment as much as we love it. It comes from your knowledge of your body, which the mat work can genuinely reveal. It’s just you on your mat, after all. Part of this is also understanding our Pilates principles which we teach you in our teacher-led classes. Our teachers won’t shout out generic, meaningless cues; our instruction will be specific to your goals and needs.
Top tips to prepare for an online Pilates class.
As tempting as it is to roll out your mat with one minute to spare before the class, we recommend you make it part of your online class experience to start setting up 10-15 minutes before the class begins. This gives you time to find a suitable space, roll your mat, light your favourite candle, grab your spikey ball, and settle into your space.
Online Pilates Class tips:
Check the battery on the device you’ll be using
– Consider turning off any other devices that are connected to your wi-fi to help keep your internet connection strong on the phone/laptop/computer you are using
– Any space will do! Don’t use the excuse that you have no space; make it your own somehow, even if it’s the bathroom floor. It’s easy to talk yourself out of something, but we’ve had people join us from the smallest and most random spaces. So we have to make it work!
– Make the lighting work for you. Why not turn on your fairy lights if you want a cosy atmosphere? But do make sure the room is well-lit so we can see you as we teach you live.
– Don’t worry too much about seeing us because our cues will keep you moving even when we aren’t doing the moves with you. I’d love your thoughts on your experience of online teacher-led classes AND follow-along offerings! And I hope to see you on your mat soon.
